Preparation Before Shift

Contact the Safety Contact Person

Each LST member institute has a Safety Contact Person (SCP) as the link between the institution and its members and the safety company hired by the LST Collaboration. A list can be found in the basic safety document.

Please contact your SCP well in time before your activity (either shift or technical), typically 1 month before, so that the documentation needed can be uploaded and reviewed in time. Remember that you will be to denied to work onsite if your documentation is not in order. In particular, you need a valid health check for the work conditions on the LST site to be able to work there. Also, you will need the filled and signed "Safety and Health Checklist", i.e. the last page of the basic safety document.

Send notification and subscribe to email list

You must inform the safety committee (lst-safety@cta-observatory.org) of your intentions so that your trip can be included in the travel schedule at the LST web site in La Palma. Include the following information:

Name, email, institution
Purpose of your travel
Expected dates
Accommodation (Town name or ORM)
Phone number (How to reach you in case of emergency like fire, evacuation, etc)
Contact at home for emergencies
If you have a valid driver license in Spain and willing to drive

If you are a non-Spaniard and will work at the LST site or Mirca storage hall for more than 7 working days, you need to attach to the email a filled and signed worker displacement form. The form can be filled for up to four workers at once.

You must join the mailing list lst-onsite@cta-observatory.org. Usually you will be added to this mailing list when the shift assignments are sent around, but let the Operations Coordinator (Alessio Berti, MPP, alessioberti90@gmail.com) or the Safety & Health Coordinator (Martin Will, MPP, mwill@mpp.mpg.de) know in case you were not included. Useful information about site and working conditions is regularly shared through this list. You are in fact encouraged to use it to contact your colleagues on site. The members of this mailing list and a link to subscribe can be found here (use your CTAO credentials to login i.e. username of the form <firstname>.<lastname>@cta-consortium.org).

Read the Documentation

  • Read the Safety Document and the other relevant documents on the LST Safety Website. Shift Leaders should read all documents to be familiar with the working procedures of all subsystems. Shifters should at least read the drive container, IT container and laser safety documents.
  • Read the Commissioning Manual and find resources important for the operations on the Operations Website, some special instructions can be found in the Special Instructions for Shifters.
  • Check the Onsite Work Schedule for works on site and who is on shift.
  • Check the recent commissioning meetings to understand the more important recent problems.
  • Read the recent entries in the ELOGs to understand the day-by-day activities on site.

ORM Booking

During your shift you must book a room at the ORM Residencia. Fill the form here. Where it asks you for the telescope pick "LST". Unless your institute has an account at the ORM you need to select to pay privately, also use this option if you are not sure. The form of payment can be changed on site. You might want to put in the comments you want a room in the annex apartments which are a bit cheaper, see the current rates. If you say nothing, they put you in the main building.

You can book your meals in the cafeteria through this form.

Shift Information

Going to ORM

The LST collaboration does not own a car that shifters can use to go up to ORM and use for daily activities (going to the site, groceries shopping etc.). Therefore, at least one of the shifters, typically the Shift Leader, should have a valid driver license to drive in Spain and be able to rent a car in La Palma for such purpose (some institutes have their own cars which can be used by shifters belonging to their institute). The Telescope Managers can help in bringing people up the first day, but in general, given that they have to follow activities on site, they can provide very limited support in this.

Safety tour

In order to avoid as much as possible issues with the organization of the safety tour for shifters, the safety tour is fixed at 14 La Palma local time on the first day of the shift. The location for the safety tour is the at the LST-1 site. Shifters should plan their trip to the island accordingly. Typically this means they should be on the island at least one day before the start of the shift. If the Telescope Managers are not available at that time due to other commitments, a new time for the safety tour will be agreed with the shifters.

If it is the first time going to LST, you need a safety tour. If you already had a safety tour in the past but it is older than 1 year, you need to have a new one.

Shift Leader Tasks

  • Fill the Commissioning ELOG every day, make sure to select the appropriate Type (Report), Category (Operation or Observation), System (LST1) and select Shift Summary. This way, the summary is sent to lst-onsite once you submit at the end of the night.
  • Fill the Startup and Shutdown Checklists in the ELOG.
  • Fill the work hour online sheet and make sure all shifters fill if every day.
  • Report in the Commissioning meeting, Mondays 9:00 CET (8:00 La Palma time) in winter time, Mondays 10 CEST (9:00 La Palma time) in summer time, an executive summary of the weekly report.
  • Check for the overall safety in the telescope area.
  • Report incidents to the commissioning whatsapp group.

Useful information and rules inside the Commissioning Container

  • The password for the Wifi inside the Commissioning Container is the standard LST password.
  • To use the printer, connect to it over Wifi. Spare paper can be found in the cabinet with office material. If the paper is almost empty, please inform Patricia.
  • Also, inform Patricia if batteries and other material are close to empty (so before things are completely gone).
  • You are allowed to eat in the Commissioning Container, but you must take high care to not soil the floor or tables. Clean up after yourself to avoid attracting mice.
  • Separate trash in the different bins and always keep them closed. If the bags are full, close the full bags and keep them inside the Commissioning Container. A company comes weekly to take them away. Replace the bag inside the bin, new ones can be found in cabinet 01.
