Rules for joint analyses results review
Back to Main page
Here below you can find the review process for MAGIC+LST1 results (approved in LST EB meeting on 2023-01-31).
- Whoever is getting results from joint MAGIC and LST analysis should present them in the weekly LST1+MAGIC WG meetings for evaluation of possible analysis issues before extracting conclusions. The reasoning is that the chain is still under heavy development, and it is beneficial to scrutinize the analysis results, before they are used for drawing scientific conclusions. At least one of MAGIC Software coordinators and at least one of LST Software coordinators should be present.
- After such discussion in the LST1+MAGIC group the "regular" results (current performance, small updates on analysis, etc.) can be also freely propagated to the rest of MAGIC and LST1 collaborations. This is already done by reports of joint analysis summary to SoBo meetings in MAGIC, and will be done with reports in LST1 analysis calls.
- If a result during the discussion is recognized as higher impact (e.g. first detection on a unknown VHE source, unusual spectra or morphology feature, ..), before broad circulation to the rest of the two collaborations "higher instances" are informed, this would be MAGIC SAPO and LST physics board, they can then decide (likely in contact with respective EB) if the results should be kept under low profile until becoming more advanced. This will not provide complete secrecy, because the LST1+MAGIC meetings are open to members of both collaborations, but can still help prevent the leaks of the information outside of the collaborations compared to showing the results e.g. in the full collaboration meeting.
- For circulation outside MAGIC and LST (e.g. to CTA meetings, conferences, etc.) the usual rules of MAGIC and LST1 apply, the release of results will also have to obey the CTA rules, but since this is going outside of LST1 and MAGIC collaboration and would completely cancel any secrecy, we will try to go to this step as late as possible.
